MRP Broadband Study notes from City of Madelia

(Jan 15, 2004)
Madelia has picked March 1-30 for their 30-day trial and we’ve set up three enrollment session at the library’s computer lab where people can come in and get registered to use the online anytime classes. People will also be able to call our chamber office to set up an appointment to enroll. We’ve lined up volunteers (including bi-lingual folks) to get trained on how to do the enrollments during a conference call from New Horizons to our library’s computer lab the last week in February. A flyer regarding the classes and enrollment sessions/appointments will go out (English on side, Spanish on the other) in a mailing to all residents from the city … they already had a mailing planned to go to everyone with the yearly calendar of recycle pick up days so our flyer will be included with that. We also will have two full pages (one English and one Spanish) in our Community Education course catalog that conveniently comes out just before our 30-days begins. Also, I’ve already started handing out some teaser info on the 30-day trial at the Chamber luncheon and at Rotary this past week. I believe reminders of the enrollment sessions/appointments will be included with our Chamber newsletter that goes out by e-mail. Hopefully we’ll also put some flyers around town at the library, senior dining, etc.

(Jan 7, 2004)
At the last committee meeting, our plans changed slightly for January.
  1. An article about the committee’s progress will appear in the newspaper around January 8th.
  2. We will be doing both a business technology needs survey and an employee training/education survey during Chamber of Commerce business visits the 2nd and 3rd weeks of January.

This survey will be available to complete in hard copy form or online through a site called “Madelia Online” that is already in existence through our local computer sales & service company.
  3. In preparation for the Technology Awareness Week (postponed until Feb 9-13), a coloring contest (pre-school thru 2nd grade) and essay contest (3rd thru 6th grade) will take place the last week of January, there will be one week to judge the contest and pick the winners (who will receive educational CDs) and then the coloring pages and essays will be displayed in various locations around town during Tech. Awareness Week in Feb.
  4. We will be distributing a “press kit” to organizations and businesses at the end of January to explain more about the project, Tech. Awareness week, supply articles for newsletters, promote the activities for Tech Awareness Week and the upcoming New Horizons Training.

The Technology Awareness Week had to be postponed until February 9-13. The following activities have been planned for February so far:

  1. An article in the newspaper the week before will feature different ages groups’ use of broadband (i.e. how our pre-school kids are using it, 4th graders with e-mail pen pals and a local 88-year old who recently got a new computer because his old one was too slow). The article will also outline the activities happening the next week.
  2. Flyers of some type will be posted, distributed around town with Tech Week activities listed. They will also be advertised on the local cable access channel.
  3. The coloring contest and essay contest as described above – probably a hand out to go home with the kids regarding Tech Week activities
  4. Program at the Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon
  5. Encouraging businesses to highlight their use of technology in their advertising or in-house displays that week
  6. Kick-off of a Question and Answer column in the newspaper
  7. We’re still working on some type of demonstration for this week

Later in February, we’ll obviously be doing more promotion of the New Horizons project which we’d like to offer in March. I guess that means we’ ll need to do training for the trainers around March 1st.
